No, we’re not aggrieved by the possible casting of an actor of color as the Human Torch. The casting of an actor of color to play the Human Torch does not take away from the number of opportunities white actors have to play characters in The Fantastic Four.

In fact, there will almost certainly be more white male actors in the film (some at higher billing) than whoever gets cast to play the Human Torch. (eg. Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, whoever they pick as the villain, etc.)

And while we’re at it—the same goes for stuff like Man of Steel and Thor. Casting an actor of color as Perry White or Heimdall didn’t take away any opportunity for a white male actor (in this case, scads of them) to still be the film’s center of attention. It is not the same as the type of systemic discrimination Hollywood uses to approach characters or actors of color.

The casting of a white male actor in some significant role in The Fantastic Four is pretty much a guarantee. The casting of an actor of color, at this point, is still speculation. That’s the difference.

I explained that I didn’t have health insurance and asked how much would it be to get checked out. They said around $100. I am in such extreme discomfort that I decided I would pay that.

I went to the appointment. The doctor remembered me from before. I got checked out, and then we chatted about comic books and Neil Gaiman and I told him Sandman was coming back and he got really excited. Said that made his day.

And then he said “The health care system is broken. I wish this was Canada. But since it’s not, I’m going to charge you ten dollars.” And then he gave me a month’s worth of medicine for free.

I thought I was going to cry. My lunch cost more than this doctor’s visit.

I wish it hadn’t needed to happen. So glad that it happened like this.

WordGirl: I have an MA in publishing, and it’s hard to say whether it got me a job or not. It probably gave me more confidence, because I moved 3,000 miles to NYC in search of a job. I got my internship through an informational interview actually. However, I didn’t find a full-time entry level job until almost three years after I graduated. Yeah, that’s what I said. ALMOST. THREE. YEARS. Of course, it should be noted that I had to take one badass proofreading test as part of my interview and I probably wouldn’t have done so well if I hadn’t taken my editing classes in grad school. (They were going to scrap the test for being too hard until I took it and passed.) *shrug*

AHAHAHAHAHA IT TOOK ME FIVE YEARS to get a full-time entry-level job.
